Its Heart Still Beats (Though You Cut it in Two)
Date
2026
Medium
Ceramic, polymer clay, underglaze
Size
5" x 3"
A functional automaton which when the handle is turned, the center of the tree stump, aptly named the "heartwood" rises and falls akin to the beating of a heart. I wanted to highlight the wonder of how, even when a tree is cut down, it is still supported and fed by the network of the forest and can still thrive and support organisms which might continue to grow through it.
